Ducko

The Ducko range originates at the foot of the beautiful Magaliesberg Mountains in the quaint little town of Kroondal, North West Province. This family owned business has been making snuggly soft duvets and pillows for the past twenty years and adding a complementary linen range of the highest quality over the last five years.

It has always been the vision of  Ducko to deliver good quality hand made goods, ensuring its customers are supplied with excellent products and personal service. We pride ourselves in the high standard of our craftsman and craftswomen and their commitment to delivering the highest quality of workmanship. Our products are made with dignity and respect for people and the environment.

Out of principle to deliver only the best duvets and linen, we use all natural 100% cotton percale. The duvets are filled with 100% duck down which are derived as a byproduct from free range ducks (independently audited) grown on our farm. Washing and sterilizing of the feathers are done on the same day of harvesting, in an environmentally friendly process as all sterilizing chemicals are biodegradable and the water is part of a multipurpose flow on the farm, eventually being regained through an organic drainage system and used to water lucerne fields for our ducks to roam on. Duvets are made according to the “box stitch” principal – the seams area minimized, but movement of down is effectively prohibited with the least wastage of material. This creates even heat distribution for optimum comfort.

Cotton piping strengthens the outer seams, giving the product durability and a finished look. Pillows are filled with a down and feather combination, giving comfortable support with maximum softness and loft. Because these products are all 100% natural you will experience healthy, invigorating sleep for years to come. The feel of our standard linen range is natural and clean, yet romantic and indulging. As part of our vision to satisfy our customers to all extends, we are able to custom make any size duvets, pillows or linen and do embroidery to your design preferences.

LIV

LIV is a company with onscience.
We are two girls that are passionate about design and we have always believed that through our designs we can create change. Our company started when we were invited to speak about sustainability at ‘Conversations with Architecture’, Decorex JHB August 2008. We soon realised that it was time to act and not just talk about sustainability and from this, beautiful products were born.

We aim towards urban sustainable desia cgn. To us, this means, design that acknowledges human beings through job creation, design that is sensitive towards culture and its local community, design that makes economic sense and that considers the impact it has on our planet by the re-using and re-thinking of waste and materials.

The materials that we use are not often regarded as resources and our designs explore making waste beautiful. We enjoy the adventure of hunting through waste and discovering treasures, making for highly original and quirky pieces.

We respond to the use of materials with little or no material. Our wire furniture range reduces design back to the original line drawing. We respond to manufacturing by skipping the recycling process. The cardboard range was made from factory waste off-cuts. Not everything needs to be recycled in order to be green, re-using a material in its existing form is an alternative sustainable route that reduces the carbon footprint of processing. We use sewing machine overlocking off-cuts to stuff our soft furniture, making them comfortable and functional landfills. We carpool everyday and plan our routes carefully making sure that we maximize our energy efficiency (including our own energy levels)

The methods that we choose to execute our designs play an important role. We try and use some forgotten and sometimes unappreciated craft skills such as crochet and wire craft and hope to bring them back to their former glory :) We believe that hand made is better than machine manufactured, as the carbon footprint resulting from factory processing is far greater than processes by hand. However, when we find it necessary to manufacture by machine we make sure that it supports our local industries. Green does not just stop at design, it is a lifestyle and a mind-shift.

Green does not only mean recycled. Re-ducing, re-using and re-thinking materials makes for a sustainable product. Danielle participated in a 3 month program called 'The Green Apprenticeship,' held in Kibbutz Lotan in the desert of Israel. She learnt and lived sustainability in the eco village in a practical way, receiving a certificate in 'Eco village design' as well as 'Permiculture design.' In her last year of Interior Design Danielle did her thesis on design for the informal trade sector. Ewaldi became inspired by the ingenuity and creative sustainable solutions in the small villages she visited when travelling in India and Nepal. In her last year of Industrial design Ewaldi did her 1st thesis on design for the informal trade sector and her 2nd thesis on social responsibility for people with disabilities. Our studies are a reflection of our intentions to use design as a catalyst to create change.

A Morsø

A Morsø is an advanced system for burning wood and, used properly, is among the most environmentally friendly heating solutions in the world.

When a wood-burning fireplace is used, an environmentally correct energy source is being used, because wood is a non-fossil natural product. Burning wood is CO2-neutral, in the sense that the CO2 released by combustion was bound to the tree throughout its lifetime. Wood is moreover one of the few energy sources that are renewable, as opposed to oil and gas.

Morsø produces environmentally clean fireplaces that meet the strictest environmental standards in the world, and naturally all Morsø fireplaces comply with European standard EN 13 240. Morsø fireplaces are also tested in accordance with Norwegian Standard NS 3058/3059, which sets requirements for low particle emissions.

To further stress the environmental aspect, Morsø has also decided to certify most of its fireplaces under the Nordic Swan Eco-label. The Swan Eco-label is a public environmental certification that sets requirements not only for low particle emissions and high efficiency, but also ensures that the environment is taken into consideration in terms of production and packaging. The Swan Eco-label shows that these fireplaces are among those with the lowest environmental impacts on the market.

Typically, an open fireplace will offer limited heat due to its design. Quite simply, a Morsø ‘Closed System’ fireplace is over 80% efficient in comparison to an open firebox, which typically losses 70% of its heat straight up the chimney polluting the atmosphere on the way.
Good environmental advice

Morsø fireplaces are designed to burn optimally and in an environmentally correct way if they are fired and installed correctly. To ensure that your fireplace burns in an environmentally correct way, follow the advice below:

1. Ensure the fireplace is installed correctly by a suitably qualified person.

2. Always read the user instructions that come with the fireplace before you begin firing it.

3. Use only clean, dry wood. The wood must have a moisture content of no more than 18%.

4. Do not burn more wood in the fireplace at any one time than the manual specifies.

5. Always make sure to buy a fireplace that meets particle emissions requirements.
